Leopoldo Lugones

Leopoldo Lugones (1874–1938) is undoubtedly the most famous member of the surname. Born in Villa María del Río Seco, Córdoba, he was one of the most important poets of early 20th-century Argentine and Latin American literature.

A central figure of modernism in Argentina, Lugones cultivated poetry, short stories, essays and chronicles. Among his best-known works are Las montañas del oro (1897), Los crepúsculos del jardín (1905) and Lunario sentimental (1909).

His figure transcends the literary: Lugones was also an intellectual committed to Argentine national identity, which made him a controversial and central figure in the cultural debate of his time.
